S-Methylisothiourea Sulfate (SMT) is a potent and selective inhibitor of inducible NOS (iNOS). SMT has been shown to be a greater inhibitor of iNOS in immunostimulated cultured macrophages and vascular muscle cells than other NOS inhibitors, including NG-methyl-L-arginine (MeArg). In the presence of SMT, there was a significant decrease in infarct volume, neuro-behavioral abnormality, brain edema, number of apoptotic cells in penumbra and NOx levels in plasma and brain of rats with transient focal cerebral ischemia. SMT may have a nueroprotective effect in rats with transient focal cerebral ischemia.
