An esterase-sensitive and cell permeable, O2-acetoxymethylated diazeniumdiolate that acts as an intracellular NO donor. Shown to induce apoptosis and to act as an antiproliferative agent in NO-sensitive human leukemia HL-60 and U937 cell lines. Also suppresses oxidized low-density lipoprotein-induced caspase-3 activation in bovine aortic endothelial cells. Exhibits enhanced stability in physiological buffers. May also be useful for temporal and spatial controlled NO availability.
