- L-NAME is an arginine analog commonly used as a potent and reversible L-arginine competitive inhibitor of NOS1, NOS2, and NOS3 (nitric oxide synthases -1, -2, and -3), which is typically more potent than NMMA (sc-200739). Nitric oxide (NO) has a variety of implications in the nervous, immune and cardiovascular systems, and is thought to be involved with pathophysiologic states such as: septic shock, stroke, hypertension, and neurodegenerative diseases. Inhibiton of NOS enzymes has demonstrated: induction of leukocyte adhesion and an increase in microvascular fluid, abolition of superoxide dismutase induced vasodilation (in mice), and inhibits arterial relaxation induced by acetylcholine - inducing an increase in blood pressure. For these reasons, L-NAME is a potentially useful tool for a variety of research applications.
