OGFRL1 Background Information The proenkephalin precursor proteins belong to the opioid neuropeptide precursor family and are proteolytically processed to form active opiod peptides that function as ligands for opiod receptors. OGFRL1 (opioid growth factor receptor-like protein 1) is a 451 amino acid protein belonging to the opioid growth factor receptor family. OGFRL1 is ubiquitously expressed and is encoded by a gene mapping to human chromosome 6. Making up nearly 6% of the human genome, chromosome 6 contains around 1,200 genes within 170 million base pairs of sequence. Deletion of a portion of the q arm of chromosome 6 is associated with early onset intestinal cancer, suggesting the presence of a cancer susceptibility locus. Additionally, Porphyria cutanea tarda, Parkinson's disease, Stickler syndrome and a susceptibility to bipolar disorder are all associated with genes that map to chromosome 6.
